tibetanart.com is a reference archive — paintings, line drawings, biographical material, and iconographic notes about Tibetan Buddhist and Newar Tantric art. It exists for study and reference. Nothing here is for sale.

By using the site you agree to these terms. They are written in plain language. If a particular use of the archive isn’t covered, the spirit of these terms is: scholarly, attributed, non-commercial.

The paintings, line drawings, photographs, written annotations, and biographical material gathered on this site are the work of Robert Beer, John F. B. Miles, and a small number of other named artists and contributors who have studied alongside them.

All rights are reserved by the respective creators. Material on this site is not in the public domain. Display on this archive does not transfer any rights to the viewer.

Where a third party (a museum, publisher, photographer) holds rights to a particular item that the archive references, that third-party holder’s rights are unaffected by anything said here.

You are welcome to:

• Read, browse, and study the archive in your browser, for personal or educational use.
• Quote short passages of the written annotations and essays in your own scholarly or critical work, with attribution to the author and a link back to the source page.
• Link freely to any page on the site. Deep links to artworks, artists, sections, and articles are stable.

The short version: don’t take the images, don’t resell them, don’t feed the archive into a model, and don’t impersonate the site or its authors.

Without prior written permission, please do not:

• Reproduce, redistribute, or republish the images, line drawings, or substantial portions of the written material — in print, on another website, in a publication, or as part of any product. This includes reposting images to social platforms in a way that strips attribution and back-link.

• Bulk-download or systematically scrape the archive — by hand, with a script, or with an automated agent. Reasonable, courteous personal browsing is fine; emptying the archive into a private dataset is not.
• Mirror or re-host the site, in whole or in part, on another domain. Caching by your browser or by a standard CDN in front of your visit does not count as re-hosting.
• Misrepresent your relationship to the site, its authors, or its contributors — for example, by claiming endorsement, affiliation, or authorship that you do not hold.
• Interfere with the site — overwhelm the server, probe for vulnerabilities outside the bounds of responsible disclosure, or attempt to alter content you have not been given access to.

Researchers, students, museum staff, publishers, teachers, and translators are explicitly welcome to get in touch about uses that fall outside the “personal browsing + short attributed quotation” default. The archive exists in part to support this kind of work and we will respond to reasonable requests.

If you publish work that draws substantially on the archive, a citation back to the relevant page and an acknowledgement of Robert Beer’s authorship are the minimum we ask.

The contents of this archive are not licensed for use as training data for machine-learning models. Crawl politely, attribute quotations, and don’t scrape the images.

Use of any material on this site — text, images, line drawings, metadata — to train, fine-tune, evaluate, or otherwise improve a machine-learning model, generative system, or similar automated tool, in whole or in part, is a use that requires explicit prior written permission.

Search-engine crawlers operating in good faith for the purpose of ordinary web indexing are welcome, subject to the site’s robots.txt. Aggressive or impolite crawling — bursts of requests, ignored rate limits, ignored robots directives — is a violation of these terms.

Pages on this site occasionally link out to museums, publishers, academic resources, and reference works. Those destinations are not under our control. Their contents, accuracy, and continued existence are their responsibility, not ours.

Where this archive reproduces or references material whose rights are held by a third party, that material is shown for reference and attribution. If you are a rights-holder and believe something here should be removed, attributed differently, or corrected, please get in touch and we will respond promptly.
